Sculptra is a process for correcting the signs of facial fat loss (lipoatrophy) by increasing skin thickness in treated areas.  Sculptra has been clinically proven to be an effective, well-tolerated, and long-lasting treatment for the signs of facial lipoatrophy. Here we will answer some of the common questions our patients have about the process.

What is sculptra?

Sculptra is a synthetic injectable material known as poly-L-lactic acid. This acid is biocompatible (a material that doesn’t harm the body) and biodegradable (able to be broken down by the body). Poly-L-lactic acid has been widely used for many years in dissolvable stitches, soft tissue implants, and other types of implants.

See our Medical Aesthetics page for a full list of skin treatment services.

How does it work?

Sculptra is injected below the surface of the skin in the area of fat loss. It provides a gradual increase in skin thickness. Visible results appear within the first few treatment sessions as the cells are stimulated to produce more collagen and the face volume rises. Sculptra will not correct the underlying cause of facial fat loss, but will help improve the appearance by increasing skin thickness in the treated area.

When do we see results and how long does it last?

Treatment results differ for each person, in clinical studies treatment results lasted up to two years after the first treatment session in most patients. The results from Sculptra are not immediate, after a few weeks the treated area can improve, or further treatments may be needed.

How many Sculptra treatments are required?

The number of treatment sessions and th amount of Sculptra needed at each session will differ for each person. Patients with moderate facial fat loss may require 3 treatment sessions with at least 2 weeks between sessions. Individuals with severe facial fat loss may require 4-5 treatment sessions with at least two weeks between sessions.
